The Duties of a Pharmacy Technician

War WV pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have many job duties, but their main duty is to dispense prescription medications. Since they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must work under the supervision of a licensed War WV pharmacist. They must also have great customer service abilities since they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when preparing prescription medications per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they may assist customers with understanding directions for their prescriptions in addition to other pharmaceutical literature and information. However, under no circumstance should they ever provide medical advice concerning prescriptions or anything else. Any such questions should be directed to the pharmacist. A few of the regular daily functions a pharmacy tech may carry out are:

  • Receive and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Dispense prescription medicines under pharmacist direction
  • Input prescription and customer information into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their prescriptions are prepared for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and control inventory

As a consequence of their profession, pharmacy techs will spend most of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, especially for newer techs with lower seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or at times having to work after hours is an extremely rewarding career assisting customers with their health and wellness.

Students often will have the benefit of working under an experienced pharmacy tech in order to get some work place experience. Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training can be accessed over the internet in your War WV home or via any available computer. • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the applicant be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has one or more years of professional experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has a high school diploma and passes their examination. Questions to Ask Pharmacy Tech Colleges

Questions to ask War WV pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have decided whether you wish to attain a degree or a certificate, and if you want to enroll in an online program or attend classes on campus, you can begin to target your school options. There are a large number of pharmacy tech colleges to select from in the War WV area and throughout the USA, so you must create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and trade schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will undoubtedly first start looking for schools that are within both your financial resources and commuting distance from your War home. If you are willing to move or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be critical. But there are several other factors that you must consider so that you may adequately compare colleges. The questions below will help you in collecting that information and help you to make your final decision.

Is the Pharmacy Tech College Accredited? Most pharmacist tech colleges and vocational schools have acquired a regional or national accreditation. One of the most respected accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and certified to provide a complete quality education. Online colleges may additionally receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals exclusively with distance or online learning. Be sure to check that the degree or certificate program as well as the college you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can help in getting financial aid or student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may require that the training program is accredited. And many War WV employers will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the School Prep You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but a number of employers prefer that the technicians they hire are certified. The pharmacy technician college should ready its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will additionally need one year of job experience. This qualification may be fulfilled by entering a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Provide Internship Programs? As we just discussed, the NHA requires a year of professional experience for certification, which may be met with an internship program. One of the best ways to get practical clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician degree or certificate programs also require practical training prior to graduation and an internship is a great way to fulfill the requirement. Check if the programs have a working relationship with War WV area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Help? Getting that initial position in War WV upon graduation, especially with no prior experience, can be a daunting endeavor without some help. Find out if the colleges you are researching have job assistance programs. If so, find out what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indicator that the college has a good reputation within the profession creating demand for its graduates. It also indicates that it has a substantial network of pharmacy contacts where it can place graduating students.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their War WV residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the pharmacy technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the pharmacist technician school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the War WV area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
