Yacolt WA pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy technicians have many job responsibilities, but their main responsibility is to dispense prescription medicines. Since they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must work under the supervision of a licensed Yacolt WA pharmacist. They must also have good customer service skills because they will be working directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be absolute when filling prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology in order that they may help customers with understanding directions for their medications as well as other pharmaceutical information and literature. However, under no circumstance should they ever provide medical advice concerning prescriptions or anything else. All such questions should be handled by the pharmacist. Several of the regular daily tasks a pharmacy technician may perform are:

  • Receive and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Prepare prescription medicines under pharmacist direction
  • Add customer and prescription data into pharmacy computer system
  • Contact customers when their prescriptions are prepared for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and monitor and manage inventory

As a consequence of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend the majority of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, particularly for newer technicians with lower seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes being required to work off-hours is a very satisfying career helping people with their health and wellness.

Students often will have the benefit of working under an experienced pharmacy tech so as to obtain some work place experience. However the non-clinical portion of the training can be accessed over the internet in your Yacolt WA home or via any available computer. With both the clinical and the online training, a complete education is provided. But not all online programs are accredited, which is essential for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So check that each online program you are looking at is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to learn with a less formal type of education, then online instruction might be the ideal solution for you.

Points to Ask Pharmacist Technician Schools

Questions to ask Yacolt WA pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have decided whether you wish to attain a degree or a certificate, and if you want to enroll in an online college or attend classes on campus, you can start to target your school alternatives. There are many pharmacy tech colleges to select from in the Yacolt WA area and throughout the United States, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast community colleges and vocational schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will undoubtedly first start looking for programs that are within both your financial resources and commuting distance from your Yacolt home. If you are able to move or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be critical. But there are a number of other issues that you need to consider so that you may adequately compare schools. The following questions will assist you in collecting that information and help you to make your ultimate selection.

Is the Pharmacy Tech School Accredited? Many pharmacist technician programs and vocational schools have earned a regional or national accreditation. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to provide a comprehensive superior education. Online schools may additionally obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online learning. Be sure to check that the degree or certificate program as well as the college you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it may help in getting financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And a number of Yacolt WA pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the Program Prep You for Certification? Certification is not mandated in every state, but numerous employers desire that the techs they employ be certified. The pharmacy tech college should prepare its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will additionally need one year of work experience. This condition can be satisfied by entering a college sponsored internship program.

Does the School Sponsor Internship Programs? As we just discussed, the NHA requires a year of professional experience for certification, which may be satisfied with an internship program. One of the best ways to acquire practical clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require clinical training in order to graduate and an internship is an excellent way to fulfill the requirement. Find out if the colleges have associations with Yacolt WA area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the School Give Job Placement Help? Finding that initial job in Yacolt WA upon graduation, particularly with no professional experience, can be a daunting undertaking without some support. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have job placement programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indicator that the school has a good reputation within the field creating demand for its graduates. It also indicates that it has a large network of pharmacy relationships where it can place graduates.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Yacolt WA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacy tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the pharmacy technician program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Yacolt WA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
