Because they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must perform under the supervision of a licensed Whitwell TN pharmacist. They must also have good customer service skills since they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be accurate when filling prescription medications per the pharmacist’s directions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they can help customers with understanding directions for their medications in addition to other pharmaceutical information and literature. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever give medical advice relating to medications or anything else. Any such questions should be directed to the pharmacist. Several of the typical daily services a pharmacy tech might perform are:

  • Receive and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Dispense prescription medications under pharmacist direction
  • Enter prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Call customers when their medications are ready for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and manage inventory

Due to the nature of their job, pharmacy techs will spend most of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, especially for newer techs with lower seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes being required to work after hours is an extremely satisfying career assisting customers with their health and well-being.

Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training may be accessed over the internet in your Whitwell TN home or via any available computer. This alternative is more accommodating for many students, notably for those who continue to work while attaining their degree or certificate. And online schools are frequently less expensive than classroom options. Tuition and costs for commuting and course materials can be decreased substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is offered. But not all online programs are accredited, which is essential for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). This condition may be met by entering a college sponsored internship program.

Does the School Offer Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA requires one year of professional experience for certification, which may be satisfied with an internship program. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. The town that became Whitwell was originally known as Cheekville, but renamed "Whitwell" for Thomas Whitwell, a British metallurgist, inventor and co-founder of the Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company, who was killed in an accident in his own ironworks in Thornaby in 1878[6][7][8][9]. Whitwell was incorporated as a city in 1956, having grown as a mining town due to the abundance of coal in the mountains near the town. In 1981 there was a major mining accident when 13 coal miners were killed in an explosion. A full list of the names of those killed in the mine explosion is on a monument at Whitwell High School. Whitwell also has an annual Labor Day celebration that has been celebrated for over 50 consecutive years.[10]

The Sequatchie River passes just east of the city, and forms a portion of its southeastern boundary.
