Because they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must work under the management of a licensed Willingboro NJ pharmacist. They must also have great customer service skills because they will be dealing directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription medicines per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they must have an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they may help customers with understanding directions for their medications in addition to other pharmaceutical literature and information. On the other hand, under no circumstance should they ever provide medical advice pertaining to medications or anything else. Any such questions should be directed to the pharmacist. Several of the common daily tasks a pharmacy technician may carry out are:

  • Greet and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Dispense prescription medications under pharmacist guidance
  • Enter prescription and customer information into pharmacy computer system
  • Call customers when their prescriptions are ready for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and monitor and control inventory

As a consequence of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend most of their working day on their feet. And working weekends and evenings is also very common, especially for newer technicians with low seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or at times having to work off-hours is a very gratifying career assisting customers with their health and well-being.

Pharmacy Technician Online Schools

Willingboro NJ student attending online pharmacy tech coursePrior to deciding on a pharmacist tech online college, it’s important to understand that most programs do require that a substantial part of the training be conducted in a clinical environment. This is typically satisfied in a local Willingboro pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students often will have the opportunity to work under a seasoned pharmacy technician so as to acquire some real world experience. Fortunately the non-clinical portion of the training may be accessed over the internet in your Willingboro NJ home or via any available computer. This alternative is more accommodating for most students, particularly for those who keep working while acquiring their certificate or degree. And online colleges are often more affordable than classroom options. Tuition and expenditures for driving and study materials can be reduced significantly. With both the online and the clinical training, a complete education is provided. But not all online colleges are accredited, which is critical for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So verify that any online college you are reviewing is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to learn with a less structured form of education, then online training might be the right option for you.

Pharmacy Tech Certification Choices

Certification is not required in every state, but a large number of graduates of pharmacy tech schools elect to become certified in order to be more competitive when seeking employment. Also, a number of Willingboro NJ pharmacies will only hire a technician that is certified. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the applicant be 18 years or older, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of work experience. The PTCB only requires that the applicant has graduated high school and passes their exam. Recertification is required every two years by both programs, which may be fulfilled by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

What to Ask Pharmacy Tech Programs

Questions to ask Willingboro NJ pharmacy technician schoolsOnce you have determined whether you would like to earn a certificate or degree, and if you want to enroll in an online college or go to classes on campus, you can start to target your school options. There are many pharmacy tech colleges to select from in the Willingboro NJ area and throughout the USA, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and technical schools. As we discussed in our introduction, you will most likely first start looking for programs that are within both your financial resources and commuting distance from your Willingboro home. If you are able to move or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be significant. But there are a number of other variables that you need to take into consideration in order to adequately compare colleges. The following questions will help you in collecting that information and help you to make your final decision.

Is the Pharmacist Tech College Accredited? Many pharmacy technician colleges and vocational schools have earned a regional or national accreditation. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been evaluated and verified to furnish a complete quality education. Online schools may additionally receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with online or distance education. Don’t forget to confirm that the degree or certificate program as well as the college you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency. Along with helping make sure that you get a quality education, it might help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Also, certification might mandate that the program of training is accredited. And many Willingboro NJ pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the College Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but a number of pharmacies desire that the techs they employ be certified. The pharmacist tech school needs to prep its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB examination. Students interested in obtaining NHA certification will also need 1 year of job experience. This condition may be satisfied by participating in a college sponsored internship program.

Does the School Provide Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA mandates 1 year of professional experience for certification, which can be satisfied by means of an internship program. One of the best ways to acquire hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require practical training prior to graduation and an internship is a great way to meet the requirement. Check if the colleges have associations with Willingboro NJ area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the School Provide Job Placement Assistance? Getting that initial position in Willingboro NJ after graduation, particularly with no professional experience, can be a difficult task without some help. Find out if the colleges you are researching have job placement programs. If so, ask what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the school has an excellent reputation within the profession generating demand for its graduates. It also means that it has a substantial network of pharmacy contacts where it can refer graduating students.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Willingboro NJ residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the pharmacy tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the pharmacist tech program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Willingboro NJ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
