Wadsworth IL pharmacy tech filling prescriptionPharmacy techs have numerous job responsibilities, but their principal duty is to dispense prescription medications. Since they are not licensed, when dispensing prescriptions they must work under the management of a licensed Wadsworth IL pharmacist. They must also have great customer service abilities because they will be working directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be accurate when filling prescription medicines per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they can help customers with understanding instructions for their medications as well as other pharmaceutical literature and information. On the other hand, under no situation should they ever give medical advice relating to medications or anything else. All such questions should be addressed by the pharmacist. A few of the regular daily tasks a pharmacy technician may carry out are:

  • Welcome and help customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Fill prescription medicines under pharmacist supervision
  • Input prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Call customers when their medications are ready for pick-up
  • Fill out and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and audit and control inventory

As a consequence of their profession, pharmacy techs will spend the majority of their working day on their feet. And working weekends and evenings is also typical, especially for newer technicians with low seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes being required to work after hours is a very gratifying career helping people with their health and wellness.

Wadsworth IL student attending online pharmacy tech courseBefore deciding on a pharmacist tech online program, it’s necessary to understand that the majority of schools do require that a substantial part of the training be conducted in a clinical environment. This is commonly fulfilled in an area Wadsworth pharmacy or hospital by means of an internship program. Students often will have the benefit of working under a seasoned pharmacy technician in order to obtain some work place experience. However the balance or non-clinical training can be accessed over the internet in your Wadsworth IL home or via any available computer. This alternative is more accommodating for many students, particularly for those who keep working while earning their degree or certificate. And online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Tuition and expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced substantially. With both the online and the clinical training, a comprehensive education is offered. But not all online programs are accredited, which is essential for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that any online school you are considering is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to study with a less formal type of education, then online instruction might be the ideal choice for you.

Pharmacist Tech Certification Choices

Certification is not required in every state, but numerous graduates of pharmacy tech programs opt to get certified so as to be more qualified when seeking employment. Additionally, many Wadsworth IL employers will only employ a tech that is certified. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requirements are that the candidate be at least 18 years old, has graduated from high school, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of work experience. The PTCB only requires that the candidate has a high school diploma and passes their examination. Recertification is called for every two years by both programs, which can be satisfied by performing 20 hours of continuing education.

What to Ask Pharmacy Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Wadsworth IL pharmacy technician schoolsAfter you have decided whether you wish to earn a certificate or degree, and if you prefer to enroll in an online program or attend classes on campus, you can start to target your school alternatives. There are a large number of pharmacy tech programs to choose from in the Wadsworth IL area and throughout the USA, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can compare colleges and technical schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will most likely first start looking for schools that are within both your financial budget and commuting distance from your Wadsworth residence. If you are willing to relocate or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech college, then location may not be critical. But there are many other issues that you should take into consideration in order to adequately compare programs. The following questions will assist you in gathering that information and help you to make your final selection.

Is the Pharmacy Tech Program Accredited? Most pharmacist technician colleges and vocational schools have earned a regional or national accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Schools earning accreditation from the ASHP have been screened and verified to provide a comprehensive superior education. Online colleges may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals only with distance or online education. Make sure to verify that the certificate or degree program as well as the college you pick are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. Besides helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it may help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Also, certification might mandate that the training program is accredited. And a number of Wadsworth IL pharmacies will only hire entry level employees that have earned a degree from an accredited school.

Does the College Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but many employers desire that the techs they hire are certified. The pharmacist technician program should prepare its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA exam. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will also need one year of work experience. This requirement can be fulfilled by participating in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Sponsor Internship Programs? As we just covered, the NHA requires one year of professional experience for certification, which may be met by means of an internship program. One of the best ways to obtain hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy tech is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require practical training in order to graduate and an internship is an excellent way to fulfill the requirement. Ask if the schools have a working relationship with Wadsworth IL area pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals for internship programs.

Does the School Give Job Placement Help? Getting that initial job in Wadsworth IL upon graduation, especially with no experience, can be a challenging endeavor without some help. Ask if the schools you are looking at have job placement programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indication that the college has an excellent reputation within the profession generating demand for its graduates. It also indicates that it has a large network of employer contacts where it can refer graduating students.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Wadsworth IL home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the pharmacist tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the pharmacist technician program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wadsworth IL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
